What is a Lisfranc Injury?Lisfranc injuries involve the midfoot area. The Lisfranc joints are between the first metatarsal, second metarsal, medial cuneiform and intermediate cuneiform. The Lisfranc complex involves all of the tarsometatarsal joints. There is also a Lisfranc ligament that runs on the bottom of the medial cuneiform to the second metatarsal base. Lisfranc injuries, to the midfoot, can include sprains, dislocations, fractures (broken bones) or all of the above. Two very serious complications can be seen with Lisfranc injuries: injuries to the dorsalis pedis artery and compartment syndrome. These are both medical emergencies and need surgery right away.CausesLisfranc injuries are most often caused by some type of trauma, which can be either direct or indirect. An example of direct trauma would be dropping something on the foot. Indirect trauma usually involves a twisting of the foot after it gets caught on something. Lisfranc injuries account for about 1% of all fractures. They are not common, but sports medicine doctors tend to see the injury more frequently. Lisfranc injuries can occur in car accidents, military personnel, horse riders and in many sports (football, baseball and soccer, to name a few.Signs and Symptoms • Swelling of the foot and/or ankle • Bruising of the foot and/or ankle • Pain usually in the middle part of the foot • Difficulty stepping on the foot (due to pain) • Widening of the midfoot area (due to bone dislocation) • Large bump on the top mid-foot area (due to bone dislocation)DiagnosisFirst, your doctor will do a thorough history and physical exam. He or she will be sure to check your pulse (dorsalis pedis artery) on the top of your foot, because sometimes this artery can be injured due to the trauma. Your doctor will also make sure you do not have a compartment syndrome, which is a build-up of pressure in the foot causing excruciating pain. The excessive pressure can cause damage to the soft tissues, nerves, arteries and muscles. Compartment syndrome is a medical emergency that requires surgery to relieve the pressure.Next, you will probably get X-rays of your injured foot. The X-ray may be weight bearing (standing on the foot) or nonweight bearing. Sometimes your healthy foot is also X-rayed for comparison. Lisfranc injuries can be difficult to see on plain X-rays. If there is a question about it, your doctor may send you for a CT (computed tomography) scan. Since a CT scan has three-dimensional views, it will allow the doctor to see the bones in much better detail. An MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is also occasionally used to evaluate the soft tissues, especially the Lisfranc ligament. An MRI is not usually needed if there is dislocation or fracture, because this usually signifies that the Lisfranc ligament has already ruptured. If the dorsalis pedis artery is not felt by hand, then a Doppler ultrasound may be needed to assess the artery.TreatmentThe treatment for Lisfranc injuries varies, depending on if you had a sprain, dislocation, fracture or all of the above. Treatment also depends on when you were diagnosed with the injury. Generally speaking, if you have sustained a Lisfranc sprain, you will need to be nonweight bearing (no weight on the foot) in a cast or removable cast boot for four to six weeks. This will usually be followed by physical therapy and a gradual return to activity. Lisfranc dislocation and fracture injuries are usually treated with surgery. It is important to try and line up the bones and joints as much as possible. This is done with wires, screws or plates. After surgery you are usually nonweight bearing for six weeks and then you begin walking with a cast-walking boot for another four weeks. If the bones and joints are not lined up properly, there is an increased risk of degenerative changes, which can lead to arthritis and instability. The 9th Skimboarding Open Competition promises to be another exciting competition as s bigger skimboarders from the other provinces of the region, other parts of the country and from other countries of the world have signified their intention to join the competition.

As in the past years, the Open Competition is being sponsored by the An Waray thru Congressman Bembem Noel and Congressman Neil Montejo, the Provincial Government of Leyte thru Governor Carlos Jericho Petilla and the local government of Tanauan, Leyte, Vice Mayor Catalina Kapunan informed.

Vice Mayor Kapunan said that the Open Competition is scheduled to open on Easter Sunday, April 24 at the Bantay Dagat Area, Barangay Sto. Nino, in Tanauan.

Melting glaciers have become a well-known symbol of climate change.

Why? “It’s one of the simplest indicators of climate change,” says Eric Rignot, a senior research scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and a professor at the University of California, Irvine. “Glaciers melt when temperatures are increasing. It’s just basic physics.”

We also have access to numerous images of disappearing glaciers. Yet sometimes it’s hard to know exactly what the pictures are showing.

Below are some of the best photos that glaciologists say illustrate what they are seeing — a worldwide retreat in glaciers due to warming temperatures. The photos represent what is happening both in an individual glacier and in the various regions around the world.

“You don’t need to be a scientist to appreciate the magnitude of change of these glaciers,” says Rignot. “There shouldn’t be any doubt about these images.”

Grinnell Glacier, Glacier National Park, Montana

These photos accurately reflect what is happening at Grinnell Glacier, which has been reduced by nearly 90 percent over the past century, and elsewhere in Glacier National Park, according to glaciologists. “When Glacier National Park was formed back in 1912 there were 100 glaciers in the park,” says Lonnie Thompson, a professor at the Ohio State University. “This year there are 26 glaciers, and those are expected to disappear within the next 30 years.”

Glaciologists agree that Jakobshavn is a good example of what’s happening with glaciers because it has a longer record than most glaciers. There is data going back as far as 1850. Jakobshavn was retreating slowly for a long time, but then in 2000 the glacier started retreating much more rapidly.

What’s more, three of the biggest glaciers in Greenland changed dramatically in the same time period, according to Leigh Stearns, an assistant professor at the University of Kansas. “These glaciers are really dynamic and they are changing much faster than we thought ice sheet glaciers could change,” she says.

Going green can save you green -- cash, that is. When you lower energy and water use, your utility bills drop. A couple veggie meals a week are cheaper than hamburgers, and carpooling costs less in gas and maintenence than driving solo. These small changes won't hurt your lifestyle, and they'll improve your financial bottom line.

Pick at least one for every room of the house!

Kitchen:

* Use a slow cooker to save money and make meals while you're at work. Plus, slow cookers can make anyone look like a top chef.
* Cut down on the number of cleaners under your sink. You'll save money-and you won't inhale gross toxic chemicals. Use baking soda to scrub your sink instead of commercial scouring powder.
* Shop every two weeks instead of every week to avoid wasting food. Eat more eggs and beans instead of meat for protein.
* A faucet that leaks one drip per minute can waste more than 3,000 gallons of water a year. And run up your water bill.

Living Room:

* Vampire power sucking you dry? Try a power strip for all your electronic devices, and turn it off when you go to bed.

Google today announced that its Google Maps Navigation service is now available in Canada (as well as Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, and Switzerland). The service is included in Google Maps 4.2 which also offers features like layer support and Street View.

Google Maps Navigation requires Android 1.6 or higher. To install it on your device, install Google Maps 4.2 from the Android Market (simply search for Google Maps to find it).

Google has also added support for French, German, Italian, and Spanish to its Search by voice service. Again, Android 1.6 or higher is required. It is also available for iPhone and BlackBerry users who have installed the Google Mobile App.

As tension builds ahead of the start of a tournament that's taken four years to finally get here, some managers are lashing out at the press, while others are moaning about how their country is never the favorite to win, but Maradona - for his madness and insanely expensive toilet seats - has decided to keep things fun.

After a little training session intra-squad match, Maradona let the winning side fire shots at the losing side's rears and even bent over for a bit of punishment himself. Granted, this activity isn't terribly unusual and can be spotted at training grounds everywhere, but it's not the type of thing you typically see days before playing in the World Cup.

New path for Nintendo, Sony, Xbox at E3

If the video game world were following its normal cycle, console makers would be revealing details of their next generation systems in less than two weeks. This cycle is anything but normal, though – and so at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), game makers will instead chart a new path.

Rather than introducing new systems, Microsoft and Sony will both introduce motion sensor controllers that are intended to both attract a new audience to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 – and extend the lifespan of those systems by at least another three years. Nintendo, which is still seeing great success with the Wii, will focus instead on once again innovating the portable world.

Independent video-game publishers, meanwhile, hope to energize their top franchises to boost sales, after a disappointing 2009.

Nintendo:

Nintendo typically has the biggest surprises of the show, but many of those have already leaked out. The biggest is the forthcoming release of the 3DS, a handheld gaming system that shows games in stereoscopic 3D without the need for special glasses. It's a virtual certainty the company will have the system playable at the show – and many expect Nintendo to announce a launch date of this holiday.

The company will also give more details on the Vitality Sensor it briefly announced last year. Like "Wii Fit," this peripheral seems an odd fit for a gaming machine at first glance, given its purpose is to relax players, rather than excite and engage them. But Nintendo has proven itself quite adept at making seemingly incompatible peripherals big sellers.

Another "Zelda" title will be unveiled at the show as well – and fans might hear a bit more about the next installment in the “Pikmin” franchise as well.

Celtics vs. Lakers Game 3 updates

OSTON – Before the Boston Celtics jetted out of California, Paul Pierce(notes) gave Los Angeles Lakers fans something to remember.

“We ain’t coming back to L.A.!” Pierce yelled in the final moments of the Celtics’ Game 2 victory.

Pierce has reason for his optimism with the Finals resuming here on Tuesday and two more games at the Garden to follow. History, however, shows it’s not too easy for the home team to sweep all three middle games, and the Celtics can blame none other than franchise patriarch Red Auerbach for that.

It was at Auerbach’s urging that the NBA decided in 1985 to switch the Finals to a 2-3-2 format instead of the standard 2-2-1-1-1 used in the earlier series. The league made the change to spare teams from having to make additional cross-country flights back when everyone was traveling commercially. Since then, the only home teams to win all three middle games have been the 2004 Detroit Pistons and ’06 Miami Heat.

Three visiting teams – the 1990 Pistons, 1991 Chicago Bulls and 2001 Lakers – have swept the middle games, which just proves one thing: At this level of the playoffs, it’s hard for any team to beat the other three times in a row.

“It’s extremely difficult to do,” said former Pistons point guard Isiah Thomas, who was MVP of the 1990 Finals when Detroit won three straight games in Portland to close out the series.

“That’s why it’s such a rare feat. Mentally, you have to go in there with the attitude that you can crush your opponent. Our locker room was totally silent before we came out for Game 3. We then ran out with [Bill] Laimbeer first, myself second and Joe Dumars third. I never forget Laimbeer running full blast out of the locker room and running a cameraman over.

Top Android phones shouldn't be wary of new iPhone 4

New iPhone features

The iPhone 4 will offer a host of new features that should appeal to existing iPhone owners and new buyers. Primarily, the key features Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced at Monday's World Wide Developers Conference revolve around video.

The iPhone 4 can record in high-defination video (at 720p for 30 frames per second), a front-facing camera that should work nicely for video chats with the recently upgraded Skype app as well as Apple's new FaceTime feature. At least initially, however, FaceTime will only work between two iPhone 4's and only over Wi-Fi.

One new Android phone comes with big and beautiful screen, the 4.3-inch HTC Evo (Sprint, $199) and another model is exceptionally quick, the HTC Incredible (Verizon, $199). Other phones, such as several models from Motorola and its innovative MotoBlur software, tap into the social networking craze that has captivated the nation in the last several years.

Besides the addition of the front-facing camera, the iPhone 4 has a 5-megapixel camera on the back with an LED Flash. Images can be focused by tap, while photos and videos can be geotagged. That means the digital data that comes with the image will include the location of where the image or video was taken. Jobs unveiled an iMovie app for the iPhone, a potentially powerful mobile editing tool that should please Spielberg wanna-bes.
What the iPhone still lacks

One iPhone 4 feature that wasn't included: A deal with a new wireless carrier. That means phone makers like HTC, Motorola and Samsung can continue to sprinkle innovative and interesting Android products across the nation's carriers.

While Jobs cited a study by Nielsen at the company's World Wide Developer conference that shows the iPhone leading Android phones 28 percent to 19 percent in market share, he left out that Android phones outsold the iPhone in the first quarter. There's a good reason why. There are now dozens of them.

The best Android alternatives

These phones are doing well in the marketplace too. According to a Wall Street Journal report, the HTC Incredible is on back order at Verizon and customers wanting new models won't get them until June 28. Meanwhile, several Sprint stores reported long lines when the HTC Evo was introduced on June 4th, with shortages in some markets.

The Evo, which runs on the Android 2.1 operating system, is a very desirable phone and includes some features found on the new iPhone 4 and some that are not.

The Evo has an 8-megapixel camera (better than the iPhone 4's 5 megapixels) and includes Sprint’s mobile “hotspot” application so you can use the Evo to connect a laptop to Sprint’s network. That last bit is called tethering, a feature the new iPhone is expected to have but Jobs didn't mention during his keynote. The Evo has a front-facing camera, like the new iPhone 4.

Like the iPhone 4, the Evo shoots video in 720p high definition. Combined with the faster upload speeds, I was able to upload small videos to YouTube from the road. Bigger videos did have trouble with uploads, however, and worked best when in a Wi-Fi zone.

There are potential drawbacks with the Evo, however.

In my tests with the Evo across Chicago, the 4G connection was unpredictable. The phone would switch from 4G to 3G to even slower speeds as I walked down the block in my neighborhood. That pattern repeated itself as I used the phone across the city. However, at home, the Evo recognized my home Wi-Fi network with ease, just as other Android phones do consistently well.

Another issue is battery life. The Evo will use the battery faster than existing iPhones -- which aren't noted for their long charges -- and certainly faster than the iPhone 4, if Steve Jobs' claims are true. If you buy the Evo, make sure you leave room in your budget for an extra charging device.

The big-screened Evo even comes with a kickstand, perhaps a first for a mobile phone. This is a terrific feature for watching media on the phone. Of course, a kickstand by itself will not scare Apple or buyers who really want an iPhone, but it's the type of useful feature that can be found on several Android phones. And increasingly, Android phones are becoming much more useful.

Sexing Flowerhorn is quite easy, especially when they have reached the length of 10 cm – 12 cm. The anal pore of the fish has a V shape in case of males and a U shape in case of females. Moreover females tend to have a smaller hump when adults.

Being cichlids their reproduction can be similar to the cichlasoma one. The female lays eggs on a flat surface, like a rock or the aquarium glass and take care of them, while the male keeps other fish away. After 3 or 4 days the fry hatch and parents take care of them moving in more secure hiding places. You can feed them with just hatched brine shrimps and other specific food for fry.

Breeding is not so easy because female can be easily stressed or worried and ends up eating her eggs, anyway if the environment is quiet and the parents are healthy reproduction is possible.

Flowerhorn like similar sized fish, astronotus ocellatus for example, need a live food integration to be healthy and in shape. Their diet can consist of live food, frozen food, and standard dry fish food. The live food should be of good dimension, or the fish could not notice it, earth worms and big meal worms or wax worm are accepted; moreover you can give small fish, poecilia reticulata could be a good choice since the high number of fry they spare monthly. Remember to feed every live food you choose, and in case of live fish be sure they are healthy.

Frozen food is another good solution, especially when you do not have the live one. Young Flowerhorn usually eat chironomus, brine shrimps and other frozen fish foods, while older ones could not notice them; at their place you can offer frozen fish for human use, you have a great choice, anyway if possible get freshwater fish and avoid the sea ones.

Both live and frozen food can pollute the water, so be sure that Flowerhorn eats all the given food in 5 minutes maximum, in case of rests remove them fast; for this reason it is better to have an aquarium set up that allow you to clean fast without needing to move objects.

Dry standard fish food is a good complementary option, especially if it is of good quality. You can find special food produced for cichlids that usually consist of big pellets that Flowerhornlike.

A Flowerhorn cichlid should be fed two times a day, everyday, anyway be careful with the quantities and avoid to overfeed it, reducing the food amount specially if it is really rich of nutrients.

Due the big size they can reach, Flowerhorn need big aquarium with a lot of free space for swimming; a 200 litres tank is the minimum you can offer to an adult fish to let it live healthily. It is a really strong fish and can live in different water conditions without having problems, anyway it is important to provide a temperature between 25°C and 30°C; pH value is also important, because acid water can tone down fish colours and make it sick, the ideal condition is a light alkaline water, with a pH between 7 and 8. Moreover it is necessary to avoid sudden condition changes of temperature and chemical values, because they can make Flowerhorn being more sensible to sickness like bacteria attacks.

Water filtration is really important because this big fish produces lots of refuses that end increasing nitrite and nitrate levels in the water. You can choose both internal and external filtration, even if the second one is preferred to leave more free space to the fish. The biological part must work properly, so be sure to have a well activated aquarium before to house a Flowerhorn cichlid.

Take also a look to the water current, an excessively strong one can damage the fish, anyway it is important that a slow movement is present, because it oxygenates the water, and avoids that the water heats only near heater.

Tank decorations are important to make the fish feel quieter. Use a layer of fine gravel and be sure that rocks and woods are stable and do not risk to fall easily on the fish; be sure, as well, that all the decorations do not make the tank cleaning too much difficult. Live plants are important for filtration and oxygenation, anyway choose strong plants like big anubias, because any Flowerhorn cichlid use to dig a lot; you can also use plastic plants, even if they are not useful and you can risk that the fish accidentally eat them.

Being big and aggressive is better not to house it with other fish species, specially if they are smaller. While if you plan to house more than one Flowerhorn, provide a big tank and divide it with accessories to let fish divide the territory; to avoid fights it is recommended not to keep more than two or three fish together in the same tank.

Intensive breeding has created a very peculiar fish that is becoming really famous and relatively common in the last few years; moreover breeders keep on trying to improve the fish qualities focusing on bigger hump on the head, new and better colours, wider body and fins, more peculiar black marks on the body, without the employ of chemical and artificial factors. For the importance of appearance, a good Flowerhorn must follow a standard that defines various aspects of its body:

- General body: the fish body must be oval and thick, with full belly and stomach; some new variants have anyway a more rounded shape.

- Hump: the hump on the forehead should be big and well proportioned to the fish size.

- Black marks: it is important that the marks are thick and well defined, this is one of the principal characteristic of Flowerhorn, anyway some new varieties do not give too much importance to them.

We've known for a while that RIM plans to replace the BlackBerry Curve 85xx with the BlackBerry Curve 8300 for a while now.

As the pictures reveal, the BlackBerry 9300 adds 3G and 802.11 n Wi-Fi connectivity but is otherwise quite similar to the device it will replace. It also appears it will be powered by BlackBerry OS 5.0 (rather than the new BlackBerry 6) and come with 256MB of memory and the same 320 by 240 display as its predecessor.

There is still no word on availability and pricing but AT&T appears to be in line to offer it.

As had been rumoured, Nokia has announced the Nokia E73 Mode for T-Mobile USA. The device is aimed at business users with features such as support for IBM Lotus Traveler, access to Salesforce.com, and applications such as Ovi Files, QuickOffice, Adobe PDF Manager and ZIP Manager.

"T-Mobile is committed to providing a variety of devices that serve our customers' needs to stay connected to the central people in their lives including family, friends and even colleagues from the office," said Travis Warren, director, product marketing, T-Mobile USA. "With the Nokia E73 Mode, we're excited to offer a premium device at an attractive price that helps Mom and Dad put work aside and make their family the top priority."

Full specifications have not been released but the E73 Mode appears to be no more than a modified E72 for T-Mobile. When you’re Chris Rock no one ignores you, certainly not in this town. He looked like he was in full monologue, jokes tumbling out of his mouth as he waved his hand around, that big, wry smile stretching across his face. And there was Bryant, ignoring every single word of it. Rock was being funny. Bryant was being serious. Rock was laughing. Bryant was staring directly ahead, emotionless, even as the Los Angeles Lakers were well on their way Thursday to a 102-89 rout over the Boston Celtics in Game 1 of the NBA Finals.

There’s no time for comedians or actors or anything else that the sideshow of the Finals in L.A. involves. It’s June, so the biggest star in this town is No. 24.

This opportunity is too precious for Kobe Bryant; now more than ever.

Bryant is in his 14th season, there’s a wrap around his tender right knee and just two months ago he had been eliminated from the best player in the league debate. Kobe was fading. The Lakers were vulnerable. In the first round some wondered whether Oklahoma City’s Kevin Durant(notes) would best him. So went the chatter.

Now Durant is home tweeting, LeBron James(notes) is doing Larry King, and Bryant is dropping 30 on the Celtics, three victories now from his fifth NBA title. There’s no time for jokes. No time for fans. No time for anything.

“You’ve got a great opportunity here,” Bryant said of his mindset before the series, “‘Don’t [expletive] this [expletive] up.’”

The Celtics came to L.A. and stood around and watched the Lakers run offense and grab rebounds and beat them down the court. “First-game excitement,” coach Doc Rivers said.

Bryant would allow no such thing with his guys. These Lakers are California cool, a relaxed group trying to shed a “soft” label. They can’t afford to drift so their star showed up “serious,” according to Jordan Farmer. He only got more serious from there.

He had a huge night, 30 points, seven rebounds and six assists. He led the Lakers defensively. He was in people’s faces when they needed to focus. He hugged them when they needed to celebrate a great play.

Afterward, Bryant had little to say, offering quick, short, unrevealing answers to the large international media contingent.

Is there a reason you’re being short with the media, he was asked?

“I don’t know,” he said.

And that was pretty much it. Everything is within Kobe’s grasp now and he knows it. Forget the MVP voting or the free-agent summits or all the talk about the future of the league shifting in July. He was once part of a soap opera like that, even flirting with the Los Angeles Clippers. He almost derailed his career with an off-court scandal.

That Kobe now seems so far gone. He is about the present and only the present. He is about real accomplishments, not empty praise.

“At this point, the key is to win every game,” he said.

Bryant shared a postgame news conference with Pau Gasol(notes) because he didn’t care to wait for a solo shot. He doesn’t need the spotlight. He just wanted to get the night over with and get on with preparing for Game 2.

When Gasol was asked whether he was going to watch fellow Spaniard Rafael Nadal in the French Open on Friday morning, Bryant snickered.

“If I wake up earlier tomorrow,” Gasol said, “I’ll maybe be able to watch a little bit of it.”

Bryant cut his teammate off.

“He’s getting his rest,” Kobe said.

Gasol looked at Bryant and then nodded.

“I definitely need my rest for sure,” he said. “I’ll just see the stats.”

Everyone laughed.

“Just making sure we’re all on the same page,” Bryant would say later.

This is the difference between a regular-season MVP and a Finals MVP. There’s no room for error now, no time for silly antics or warm-up dances or Chris Rock jokes.

There is only what Pat Riley called the precious present, and after all these games and all these chances, Kobe Bryant knows it better than anyone in the NBA. Across the way is a big three of aging veterans, and they couldn’t match the desperation of the 31-year-old Bryant.

A fifth NBA championship would mean so much to him. Leading the Lakers to just their third Finals triumph over the Celtics would mean even more for the franchise. Getting the Lakers their 16th title, just one behind Boston’s record 17 would mean everything to L.A.

Winning the championship last year meant Bryant could free himself of the shackles of Shaquille O’Neal(notes). He proved he could be the undeniable leader of a title team. Now this is something else.

Kobe’s never going to win the best player debate with Michael Jordan, but just forcing people to have it is a victory. And with each title he wins, the closer he gets to M.J.’s six, the more the topic gets discussed.

It’s all background noise now though. Bryant isn’t listening. Three more victories needed. The Finals won’t be easy. Boston will respond. Everything will get tougher. Everything will get meaner.

The tunnel vision says it all. Chris Rock can wait.

Recessionomics 101: How to Make Extra Money

Jennifer Winslow wanted to earn some extra cash without giving up the flexibility of working part time.

An avid cook, she and a friend initially planned to cater meals for busy families. When that turned out to be too time consuming, she tried baking. More than five years later, she has a thriving bakery business in Winslow, Maine (her husband's family has been in town a long time).

Now on her own, she supplies four restaurants with cakes and other sweets and makes desserts for individuals and weddings.

A growing number of Americans would like to follow Mrs. Winslow's example. Job loss, tighter credit and a renewed appreciation for savings is persuading more people to cut expenses.

But you can cut only so far. Two full years of recession have not left many unexamined family expenses. Meanwhile, prices -- from gasoline to utilities to food -- haven't fallen. And incomes, if you still have one, aren't exactly shooting through the roof. It's time to make some money.

Fortunately, there also are many ways to earn extra cash even when full-time jobs and extra shifts aren't an option. They include taking in boarders, starting a small business and getting paid for your opinion. Some of this work provides only a free meal and $10 fee but others, such as tutoring or selling Grandma's diamond broach, could be quite lucrative.

The key, according to Gail Cunningham, a spokeswoman for the National Foundation for Credit Counseling, is to "find your skill or what you think would be fun to do." She says, for example, someone with computer skills may want to teach a class, install computers or create Web sites.

"Think about what are people willing to pay for," says Ms. Cunningham. "Who do you know and how can you leverage existing relationships." For example, does your dentist need someone to clean the office or does your accountant need someone to cater the Christmas party?

1. Sell It: One of the fastest and easiest ways to get extra cash is to sell unwanted and unused stuff. And it's never been easier to make hundreds or even thousands of dollars. You could post a few signs in the neighborhood and sell everything at a Saturday garage sale or you could try the online route with services such as eBay or Craigslist.

Linda Lightman first tried eBay more than 10 years ago because she wanted to help her sons get more for their old videogames. It was so easy that the former lawyer started selling her old suits. Then, friends asked her to sell theirs.

Today, shoplindasstuff.com has 50 employees and expects to reach $7 million in sales this year on eBay. "The economy has been the perfect storm for my business," Ms. Lightman says. "More people need cash, and more people are looking for bargains."

Auction houses also are a popular place to sell potentially valuable items. Alexander Eblen, head of the jewelry and fine timepieces department at Leslie Hindman Auctioneers in Chicago, says people often don't realize the value of an old watch or grandmother's Art Deco jewelry. For example, a Tiffany broach recently sold for about $68,000.

Don't overlook some of the more mundane items, such as books and sports equipment. Many bookstores provide cash or store credits for "gently" used books. Similarly, stores like Play It Again Sports provide cash and store credits for gently used sports equipment. Check with local stores but they often need golf clubs, ice skates, lacrosse equipment and other gear.

2. Rent It: Your home, probably your biggest asset, is a potential source of extra cash. A growing number of people are renting out a room or grabbing a roommate for extra income. It's less difficult for residents in "destination" locations near colleges, resorts or cities to rent a room or even the house for a few weeks, months or long term.

Some homeowners prefer using a real-estate agent, others like finding renters themselves, online or through friends. Either way, it's crucial to vet the potential tenant and spell out expectations. Rents vary from a few hundred dollars to thousands in large cities.

Another option that's a longtime favorite of students and young adults is earning extra cash for house and pet sitting.

3. Say It: Many businesses are willing to reward individuals for taking opinion polls, testing products or being a secret shopper. The compensation varies, and it's crucial to avoid scams. Work only with reputable companies and avoid anything that requires a membership fee. One place to start is OpinionPlace.com, which lets poll participants choose Amazon.com gift cards, PayPal credits or American Airlines AAdvantage miles. There also are stores such as CVS, whose Advisor program provides consumers who complete surveys with ExtraBucks coupons.

People won't make much but they might have fun working in a focus group or evaluating products or services as a mystery shopper. Once again, watch out for scams. Don't pay any fees or respond to unsolicited emails. A good place to start is Volition.com or Mysteryshop.org, the Web site for the Mystery Shopping Providers Association.

If current Vice-President Noli de Castro should not retake office, his successor will be the 15th Vice President of the Philippines. The legislators elected in the 2010 elections will join the senators of the 2007 elections and will comprise the 15th Congress of the Philippines.

The 2010 election will be administered by the Commission on Elections in compliance with the Republic Act No. 9369,[1] also known as Amended Computerization Act of 2007. It will be the first national computerized election in the history of the Philippines.

Local elections are also to be held in all provinces, cities and municipalities.

GENERAL SANTOS, Philippines (AFP) – Philippine prosecutors on Tuesday filed 25 counts of murder against a politician accused of leading an election-linked massacre of 57 people, officials said.

The charges against Andal Ampatuan Jnr were filed in a court in the southern city of Cotabato, which has jurisdiction over the remote farming area where the slaughter occurred last week, said prosecutor Edilberto Jamora.

However authorities said they were looking to have the case heard outside of the southern Philippines because witnesses were extremely worried about intimidation or other repercussions from the extremely powerful Ampatuan clan.

"They are reluctant to go to court and they fear for their safety and their families' safety," Justice Secretary Agnes Devanadera told reporters in Manila.

The Ampatuans, through the backing of their own private army and the support of President Gloria Arroyo's ruling coalition, have ruled the southern province of Maguindanao since 2001.

Ampatuan Jnr's father, who goes by the same name, has been governor of Maguindanao since 2001, although he has held other senior provincial positions since the fall of dictator Ferdinand Marcos in 1986.

While Ampatuan Jnr, a local town mayor, is being held in a Manila detention centre, his father and seven other relatives are also being investigated over their potential roles in the killings.

Other members of the Ampatuan clan, including the father, have been summoned to submit affidavits in the investigation, Jamora said, without specifying how many.

Authorities said Friday that Ampatuan Jnr had been charged with seven counts of murder for the massacre.

The number spiked to 25 on Monday as authorities gathered more evidence and processed death certificates.

Jamora said Ampatuan Jnr had only been charged with 25 murders so far because authorities had only processed 25 death certificates, indicating more charges could follow.

About 100 soldiers, policemen and other Ampatuan gunmen murdered 57 people, including the wife and two sisters of a rival from another Muslim clan, Esmael Mangudadatu, last Monday.

The victims' bodies were buried in specially dug graves or dumped on a road near a town bearing the Ampatuan name.

Among those killed were journalists, lawyers and other civilians.

Mangudadatu said the killings were carried out to stop him from running against Ampatuan Jnr for the post of governor in next year's national elections.

Mangudadatu had sent the female members of his clan to register his nomination for governor, and they were abducted along with the journalists and lawyers en route to an electoral office.

More than a dozen people unrelated to the clan feud and who were just driving by were also shot dead.

The massacre has outraged the nation and embarrassed Arroyo.

Her Lakas Kampi CMD expelled Ampatuan Jnr and Snr from the coalition last week, but critics have said Arroyo knew for years about their warlord reputation.

Devanadera stressed Tuesday that Ampatuan Jnr would not be the only person charged.

"On the basis of the statements we have gathered, there are more suspects than (those) on the watch list... there were more than a hundred who participated in this," she said.

"We have many witnesses now and their statements have already been prepared."

In Manila, military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Romeo Brawner said that military forces in Maguindanao were in a position to assist the police in the event they had to serve arrest warrants against the Ampatuans.

"The troops will be there to assist in making sure that the filing of these documents will be served peacefully without any chance of chaos or violence in the area," he told reporters.

The Ampatuans still control many local positions in Maguindanao and have hundreds of armed followers there.

While the Ampatuans' armed followers appear to be lying low, Brawner said the military was watching out for any resurgence.

The World Awaits: Pacquiao vs. Mayweather

If the world was only simply buzzing before, the planet is now demanding that it happen.

After winning a record seventh world title in his seventh weight division Saturday night, Manny Pacquiao and his team fielded the questions about his next logical opponent: Floyd Mayweather Jr.

"It's the promoter who makes the fights," Pacquaio said about a potential Mayweather clash. "My job is to fight in the ring."

When asked, Floyd Mayweather usually answers in a similar fashion.

But if the fighters don’t want to talk about it, the fans certainly do. The crowd started chanting “Bring on Floyd!” prior to the end of the bout. HBO commentators Jim Lampley, Larry Merchant and Emanuel Steward were already theorizing about it. The crowd roared when Pacquiao trainer Freddie Roach mentioned that it was the fight he wanted in the ring after Pacquiao’s beating of Miguel Cotto.

"Sure, we'll fight Mayweather, if he wants to," Roach said.

Prior to retiring in 2008, Floyd Mayweather was considered the consensus pound for pound king of boxing following victories over Zab Judah, Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton. Upon his retirement, Pacquiao rose to prominence with impressive stoppage wins over De La Hoya, Hatton and now Cotto.

Mayweather’s retirement proved to be nothing more than a hiatus. Earlier this year Mayweather returned to face lightweight champ Juan Manuel Marquez.

Floyd earned himself an easy lopsided decision in that fight. Considering Marquez is the only fighter in recent memory to make Pacquiao look human (fighting him to a draw and split decision loss), it was impressive to see Mayweather win so handily.

From a boxing perspective: Pacquiao defeated De La Hoya and Hatton in far more impressive fashion than Mayweather. On the other side of the coin, Mayweather defeated Marquez far more convincingly than Pacquiao. He also fought De La Hoya and Hatton prior to Pacquiao, leading to the possibility that he fought both men closer to their prime than Pacquiao. All of these intangibles make it a must see fight.

From a business perspective: Mayweather sold over 2 million PPV’s for his fight against Oscar De La Hoya, just under a million against Hatton and surprisingly over a million against Marquez. Pacquiao sold over 1 million against De Le Hoya, just under a million against Pacquiao and though official numbers are not yet know, it is believed that his fight with Cotto will surpass over a million buys. All of these numbers lead to huge numbers if Pacquiao VS Mayweather were to meet.

It’s the best fight and most significant fight than can be made in boxing at this time. It’s the most lucrative fight that can be made, possibly of all time.

To the promoters, managers, advisors and fighters: Make it happen. It would be a shame if it didn’t.

CAVITE CITY, Philippines (CNN) -- At 16, Rhandolf Fajardo reflects on his former life as a gang member.

Efren Peñaflorida's Dynamic Teen Company offers Filipino youth an alternative to gangs through education.

"My gang mates were the most influential thing in my life," says Fajardo, who joined a gang when he was in sixth grade. "We were pressured to join."

He's not alone. In the Philippines, teenage membership in urban gangs has surged to an estimated 130,000 in the past 10 years, according to the Preda Foundation, a local human rights charity.

"I thought I'd get stuck in that situation and that my life would never improve," recalls Fajardo. "I would probably be in jail right now, most likely a drug addict -- if I hadn't met Efren."

Efren Peñaflorida, 28, also was bullied by gangs in high school. Today, he offers Filipino youth an alternative to gang membership through education. Vote now for the CNN Hero of the Year

"Gang members are groomed in the slums as early as 9 years old," says Peñaflorida. "They are all victims of poverty."

For the past 12 years, Peñaflorida and his team of teen volunteers have taught basic reading and writing to children living on the streets. Their main tool: A pushcart classroom.

Stocked with books, pens, tables and chairs, his Dynamic Teen Company recreates a school setting in unconventional locations such as the cemetery and municipal trash dump.

Peñaflorida knows firsthand the adversity faced by these children. Born into a poor family, he lived in a shanty near the city dump site. But he says he refused to allow his circumstances to define his future.

"Instead of being discouraged, I promised myself that I would pursue education," he recalls. "I will strive hard; I will do my best."

In high school, Peñaflorida faced a new set of challenges. Gang activity was rampant; they terrorized the student body, vandalized the school and inducted members by forcing them to rape young girls, he says.

"I felt the social discrimination. I was afraid to walk down the street."

Peñaflorida remembers standing up to a gang leader, refusing to join his gang. That confrontation proved fateful. At 16, he and his friends "got the idea to divert teenagers like us to be productive," he says.

He created the Dynamic Teen Company to offer his classmates an outlet to lift up themselves and their community. For Peñaflorida, that meant returning to the slums of his childhood to give kids the education he felt they deserved.

"They need education to be successful in life. It's just giving them what others gave to me," he says.

Today, children ranging from ages 2 to 14 flock to the pushcart every Saturday to learn reading, writing, arithmetic and English from Peñaflorida and his trained teen volunteers. Watch Peñaflorida and his group in action with their push cart classroom »

"Our volunteers serve as an inspiration to other children," he says.

The group also runs a hygiene clinic, where children can get a bath and learn how to brush their teeth.

Earthquakes usually give no warning at all. Prepare your family before the Earthquake...

Now is the time to formulate a safety plan for you and your family. If you wait until the earth starts to shake, it may be too late. Consider the following safety measures:

· Always keep the following in a designated place: bottled drinking water, non-perishable food (chira, gur, etc), first-aid kit, torchlight and battery-operated radio with extra batteries.

· Teach family members how to turn off electricity, gas, etc.

· Identify places in the house that can provide cover during an earthquake.

· It may be easier to make long distance calls during an earthquake. Identify an out-of-town relative or friend as your family’s emergency contact. If the family members get separated after the earthquake and are not able to contact each other, they should contact the designated relative/friend. The address and phone number of the contact person/relative should be with all the family members.

Safeguard your house

· Consider retrofitting your house with earthquake-safety measures. Reinforcing the foundation and frame could make your house quake resistant. You may consult a reputable contractor and follow building codes.

· Kutchha buildings can also be retrofitted and strengthened.

During Quake

Earthquakes give no warning at all. Sometimes, a loud rumbling sound might signal its arrival a few seconds ahead of time. Those few seconds could give you a chance to move to a safer location. Here are some tips for keeping safe during a quake.

· Take cover. Go under a table or other sturdy furniture; kneel, sit, or stay close to the floor. Hold on to furniture legs for balance. Be prepared to move if your cover moves.

· If no sturdy cover is nearby, kneel or sit close to the floor next to a structurally sound interior wall. Place your hands on the floor for balance.

· Do not stand in doorways. Violent motion could cause doors to slam and cause serious injuries. You may also be hit be flying objects.

· Move away from windows, mirrors, bookcases and other unsecured heavy objects.

· If you are in bed, stay there and cover yourself with pillows and blankets

· Do not run outside if you are inside. Never use the lift.

· If you are living in a kutcha house, the best thing to do is to move to an open area where there are no trees, electric or telephone wires.

If outdoor:

· Move into the open, away from buildings, streetlights, and utility wires. Once in the open, stay there until the shaking stops.

· If your home is badly damaged, you will have to leave. Collect water, food, medicine, other essential items and important documents before leaving.

· Avoid places where there are loose electrical wires and do not touch metal objects that are in touch with the loose wires.

· Do not re-enter damaged buildings and stay away from badly damaged structures.

If in a moving vehicle:

Move to a clear area away from buildings, trees, overpasses, or utility wires, stop, and stay in the vehicle. Once the shaking has stopped, proceed with caution. Avoid bridges or ramps that might have been damaged by the quake.

After the Quake:

Here are a few things to keep in mind after an earthquake. The caution you display in the aftermath can be essential for your personal safety.

· Wear shoes/chappals to protect your feet from debris

· After the first tremor, be prepared for aftershocks. Though less intense, aftershocks cause additional damages and may bring down weakened structures. Aftershocks can occur in the first hours, days, weeks, or even months after the quake.

· Check for fire hazards and use torchlights instead of candles or lanterns.

· If the building you live in is in a good shape after the earthquake, stay inside and listen for radio advises. If you are not certain about the damage to your building, evacuate carefully. Do not touch downed power line.

· Help injured or trapped persons. Give first aid where appropriate. Do not move seriously injured persons unless they are in immediate danger of further injury. In such cases, call for help.

· Remember to help your neighbours who may require special assistance-infants, the elderly, and people with disabilities.

· Listen to a battery-operated radio for the latest emergency information.

· Stay out of damaged buildings.

· Return home only when authorities say it is safe. Clean up spilled medicines, bleaches or gasoline or other flammable liquids immediately. Leave the area if you smell gas or fumes from other chemicals. Open closet and cupboard doors cautiously.

· If you smell gas or hear hissing noise, open windows and quickly leave the building. Turn off the switch on the top of the gas cylinder.

· Look for electrical system damages - if you see sparks, broken wires, or if you smell burning of amber, turn off electricity at the main fuse box. If you have to step in water to get to the fuse box, call an electrician first for advice.

· Check for sewage and water lines damage. If you suspect sewage lines are damaged, avoid using the toilets. If water pipes are damaged, avoid using water from the tap.

· Use the telephone only for emergency calls.

· In case family members are separated from one another during an earthquake (a real possibility during the day when adults are at work and children are at school), develop a plan for reuniting after the disaster. Ask an out of state / district relative or friend to serve as the “family contact”. Make sure everyone in the family knows the name, address, and phone number(s) of the contact person (s).

First, I need to learn more about blogging and what is all about this blog " Ro's Space ". I think this will be my personal blog which I can post anything and do anything I want to do about this blog. Secondly, because of I'm newbie about this things I can not set up this blog well so I just got helped from my friend jophil. He just make a little improvement to my blog and then made it looks better. I, usually interested in editing about html, codes, web pages and more about websites but not have any idea on how to start. So, that's why I'm gonna have to study and learn more about this.
